We're moving away from a situation of thinking of the cloud as being the web. At the beginning, the cloud was where web users would connect to get a service. While that's still very much the case, that viewpoint is changing to the web part becoming an API. A tailored app can simply connect to that cloud service's functionality via an API, said Sridhar Vembu, CEO of Zoho in conversation with Sheila Gulati of Tola Capital at the Zoho user conference, Zoholics, in Burlingame, California. Much of what's driving this behavior is the multiple devices connecting to the cloud. Three years ago, 100 percent of the cloud application traffic was coming from the web. Today, a third of that traffic is coming from an app installed on a mobile device, said Vembu. With continued development of Zoho, Vembu hopes to shake up the application industry. He believes current industry paradigms are broken from both a technological and customer point of view. Too much money is spent on application integration
